The chips and salsa are to die for! Their food is very delicious, if you even have room to eat your meal after you pile into those chips and salsa! The staff is very friendly and it is a very fun place to dine!

I was shocked to look this place up on Yelp and find that it has a 5-star review until I noticed that both reviewers are from the area. Granted, I am a native Californian and have traveled to Mexico several times, so my standards for Mexican food are a bit higher, but it is also my favorite cuisine, so I tolerate bad Mexican food, but this place was beyond what I could stand. Were it not for the fact that my in-laws were treating and I wanted to be polite, I would not have finished my meal. I thought perhaps it was just my meal that was super salty because someone had made a mistake or spilled salt, but others at the table also said their meals were very salty (and they have different types of meat and different dishes). I said to my sister-in-law (who is from Ohio): It tastes like someone-made-a-mistake-salty. She agreed which tells me that it's not just my taste buds being used to healthier (California/non-Ohio) cuisine. It was so bad it literally caused an onset of edema that lasted until the next morning. Additionally, 2 people who had the raspberry iced tea asked for something else before finishing it. I almost vomited trying to finish it (again, not wanting to be rude). Again, I understand the other 2 reviewers if this is their only option, but I would take Taco Bell over this place ANY DAY.

Great food at a great price! I have never been disappointed with the food here. The staff is always friendly and the service is fast. I have even taken someone from England to this restaurant who was not that familiar with Mexican food, and they loved it.

We're not from this area and was traveling through hungry for Mexican food. My wife and I enjoyed the food, liked the atmosphere and would stop again.

I am not sure why the Californians on here think they have perfect food, having spent a lot of time there it is just like any other place. With that said though I have to agree with the Cali poster on this one. As far as Maxican places go it is not steller. The food is very salty (though I mostly blame the rice). With that being said though the food is decent, if they dropped the salt content it would probably go up a star. The salsa is very good, the refried beans were awesome and my drink well made. In short, not a place to take your "culturally sensative pallette" having guests, but if you want some mexican for a good price, I suggest giving it a try for yourself.

The guac tasted like laundry detergent. The chips tasted like corn flakes. My friend's quesadilla wasn't melted in the center. The servers didn't seem to posses any customer service training. I constantly had to repeat requests for things. One of the servers didn't understand my request in either in Spanish or English. This place is is literally the worst Mexican restraurant I've ever been to. If you hate flavor and good food then maybe this place is for you.

Friends took us there for dinner. My carne asada was marginal (extremely thin beef; most of it was fat and gristle), and my wife had the house special (chicken enchiladas). Not a bad place, but in our travels, we've had better.

Food is pretty good, the service is a little slow, can be loud and the Mexican music isn't very good.

The wife and I like to stop at this restaurant when in the New Philadelphia area. We have always found the food to be tasty and well prepared using fresh ingredients. The blanco queso (cheese dip) is quite enjoyable. Our favorite dish to order is the Parrillada. This is a mixed grill of chorizo, chicken, pork, beef and shrimp. It is served with refried beans, lettuce, rice, chopped tomatoes and guacamole. Always have a huge amount of leftovers which reheat well. Only thing we did not realize is that the restaurant does not serve alcohol on Sundays. Do yourself a favor and give them a try.

Small towns don't often have a wide variety of culinary offerings. El San Jose is by no means gourmet cuisine, but it is certainly a nice change of pace from Ponderosa. The angle of this restaurant is definitely "authentic" Mexican although how authentic it is I am ill-equipped to judge. I do know that it is, thankfully, a far cry from On The Border. The food is what you'd expect from a Mexican place, just a bit more rudimentary...and delicious. They offer a fairly wide selection ranging from large platter dishes to a plentiful a la carte menu. And, as far as price and flexibility go, you can't beat the choices of their individual items. After years of dining here, I continually come back to their grilled steak dishes, which are consistently the highest quality as far as their meats go. Over the past year they have increased their prices somewhat - no doubt to keep up with rising costs. Even with the a more expensive menu, a night out here will come nowhere close to breaking the bank. The biggest increases can be found in their a la carte menu which used to have meal-sized portions for $4-$5. Now you will paying near $7. The ambiance of this place is great. They did a major expansion and renovation a few years ago. Prior to that, El San Jose was even more hole-in-the-wall - and better for it. Now, they can provide amble seating for the busy weekends while still maintaining at least a bit of its previously cheesy charm. El San Jose is quickly becoming a New Philly/Dover landmark. It's a must for anyone wanting simple Mexican at afford prices. It is always a mandatory stop any time we are back in the area.

Holly saltness! I'm from AZ granted but this place was not good at all. The salsa was disappointing and the chips tastes literally like corn flakes.

El San is a Tuscarawas county staple. Great food, great service, and reasonable prices. The cheese in the soft tacos is amazing! I get the same thing everytime: a mix of soft tacos, an enchilada, and rice. The servers are friendly, professional, and very very quick. Definitely recommended!

Ah, El San Jose -- the first of the semi-Authentic Mexican/Central American restaurants to open up in the Tuscarawas County region. It took over an old Italian restaurant a decade or so ago, and was nestled right next to the Texas Roadhouse, which led to jokes about the Texas/Mexico border. They had, oh, sixty or so combination meals you could choose from, the staff would yell around in Spanish, there were limited parking spots, and the dining area was one relatively small room. Due, perhaps, to being the first, it held the distinction of being the place to go when you wanted Enchiladas Super Rancheras. Times, however, have changed. I recently returned to the Saint Joe, only to see that it has blossomed with its business. It expanded, and, in doing so, had also annexed a neighboring parking lot. While it once had an atmosphere similar to a hole-in-the-wall, it now looked like every other Mexican restaurant from here to San Jose. It also tasted like them, too. Now, I'm not saying ESJ is bad, by any stretch. I'm giving them 3 stars -- "A-OK." But, if you're coming back to the area, and you're looking for the San Jose of yore, you won't find it here.

Not good. The food is slop. Go to Tlaquepaque or El Papas

I guess if this is the only Mexican food you have to compare with or you don't know real Mexican food you may think this is good food. Food flavor profiles are very one dimensional. When the main meat proteins are bland, just cover with cheese. The ranchero sauce so bland. Sorry have to agree with the other Califorian. This is about one step up from a burrito at Seven-Eleven. Sorry my Ohio friends You Don't Know Mexican.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
